2021 will see the UK’s biggest NHS flu programme roll out in history, with over 35 million people due to receive the jab. The programme follows on from the 2020 programme where a record 18 million people were vaccinated. In 2020, 4 in 5 (80.9%) people aged 65 and over in England received their flu vaccine.

New research out today by Well Pharmacy has revealed that 63% of the population will opt to get a flu vaccination this year. This is an increase of 17% on last year when only 46% of people got the jab.

Flu claims 17,000 lives a year in England on average — and experts are predicting a difficult flu season this year with a surge of respiratory viruses because the UK population had limited exposure to these viruses last winter as a result of lockdown restrictions.

Research shows that 52% of people said they were more likely to get the flu jab this year, than last year, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Well, the UK’s largest independent pharmacy will be offering the flu vaccination service from over 750 pharmacies across the UK this winter.

Gillian Stone, NHS Standards and Services Manager from Well Pharmacy said:

“We are seeing very high demand for our flu vaccination service, with nearly half of our appointments already pre-booked online by NHS and private patients. There are still plenty of appointments available, and we encourage people to book as soon as they can to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“We currently have a good stock availability of flu vaccinations in our supply chain network, and we will be ready to start administering flu jabs from next week for people who have already booked an appointment.

“For those who have not yet booked an appointment, we urge you to book early on our website or by visiting one of our pharmacies to secure your flu vaccine, as we anticipate a busy flu season this year.”
