From today (Monday 26th July) women will be able to buy Hana and Lovima, which are both Desogestrel 75 microgram progesterone-only contraceptives, from local community pharmacies after a private consultation with your pharmacist.
Well Pharmacy, UK’s largest independent pharmacy chain, welcomes the decision from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which recently reclassified these drugs to make them more accessible and readily available from your local pharmacy without a prescription.
Wendy Lee, Pharmacist from Well Pharmacy said:
“We see this as a really positive step for women. We believe that making these contraceptive pills available without a prescription will help make accessing contraception services easier for women.”
“When requesting to buy Hana or Lovima from your local community pharmacy, you will speak to the pharmacist who will ask you some simple questions just to make sure the pill is suitable for you and your health and wellbeing. Our pharmacists have received specific training to support and advise women on these products and will check to make sure Desogestrel is the right choice of contraception for them to use.
“Our pharmacists are perfectly placed in the heart of the community to help make sure women receive the right healthcare information and advice they need so they can make informed choices about their sexual health.”
Desogestrel is still available for free on prescription too.
Well Pharmacy can support women with a free and confidential consultation with no appointment necessary to support with any sexual health questions. To find closest local Well Pharmacy where you can now buy Hana and Lovima over the counter, please visit: https://finder.well.co.uk/
